The Medical Society of Eastern Pennsylvania was founded in 1961 as a local affiliate of the National Medical Association (NMA), which was established in 1895 to promote the healthcare of the African-American community as a whole, but especially the professional well-being and aspirations of African-American physicians. While Black physicians represent less than 6% of the nation's physicians, there are hundreds of physicians of African descent in this region. The MSEP is an award winning affiliate of the NMA, having been recognized as the 2024 Region II Society of the Year and was awarded the 2024 Small Local Society of the Year at the NMA National Convention.
There are at least four general membership meetings held annually. The Mercy-Douglass Lectureship open to the general public and features speakers addressing medicals concerns of a national or global import.
Our pipeline programs includes the McGruder-Knox Scholarship Program, which awards five scholarships to medicals student from each of the five local schools who demonstrates leadership qualities, and have contributed to projects that have benefited the community. The inaugural cohort of the MSEP MCAT Prep Academy in 2023 included 25 local students who aspire to become the next generation of physicians. Our society also achieved national recognition for the #BlackPhillyMedGradWishlist campaign, which welcomes new medical school graduates to the Philadelphia area as they begin their residency training. By fostering a supportive community, we hope to make the Greater Philadelphia area these freshly minted doctors' permanent home.
On the third Sunday of the month from 2-3PM,we broadcast on WURD-AM, Physicians-On-Air, a program for members to present different facets of medical care, relating to their specialty and of the public interest.
