ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The MD Career Awareness Program is MSEP’s after-school enrichment program designed to introduce high school students to the diverse world of healthcare careers.

Hosted at Overbrook High School, the program serves students in grades 9–12 through a series of interactive workshops, hands-on learning experiences, and presentations led by healthcare professionals. By connecting students directly with physicians and other medical experts, the program helps young people explore career possibilities, build confidence, and envision themselves as future leaders in healthcare.

Through meaningful exposure and mentorship, students gain a deeper understanding of the educational pathways and professional opportunities available within the healthcare field.

WHAT STUDENTS EXPERIENCE

The MD Career Awareness Program combines career exploration with hands-on learning to create engaging and memorable experiences for students.

Throughout the program, participants have opportunities to:

  • Learn directly from physicians and healthcare professionals
  • Explore a wide range of healthcare careers and specialties
  • Participate in interactive workshops and demonstrations
  • Engage in discussions about medical education and career pathways
  • Develop practical skills through hands-on activities
  • Receive CPR training and certification

By moving beyond traditional classroom instruction, the program allows students to experience healthcare in ways that are both informative and inspiring.

WHY EARLY EXPOSURE MATTERS

Many students with an interest in science and medicine have limited opportunities to interact with healthcare professionals or learn about the steps required to pursue medical careers.

The MD Career Awareness Program helps bridge that gap by introducing students to healthcare pathways early in their educational journeys. Through mentorship, career exploration, and skill-building activities, students gain valuable knowledge that can inform their academic decisions and future goals.

The program encourages students to see themselves as future healthcare professionals while helping them better understand the preparation required to succeed in STEM and health-related fields.

THE LONG TERM IMPACT

MSEP’s investment in early career awareness helps students build a foundation for future success.

Through participation in the program, students develop:

  • Greater readiness for college-level STEM studies
  • Awareness of prerequisite coursework required for medical and healthcare careers
  • Leadership and communication skills
  • Teamwork and collaboration abilities
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Confidence in pursuing ambitious academic and professional goals

By supporting students early in the educational pipeline, the MD Career Awareness Program helps cultivate a future generation of healthcare professionals who are prepared to serve their communities and advance health equity.

BUILDING THE FUTURE OF MEDICINE

The future of healthcare depends on creating opportunities for young people to explore, prepare for, and pursue careers in medicine and the health sciences.

Through the MD Career Awareness Program, MSEP is committed to expanding access, fostering curiosity, and empowering students to imagine—and achieve—their place in the healthcare workforce.
